The words and music of fall convocation will once again celebrate the opening of the academic year on Wednesday, September 10 at 3:30pm in the Chapel. The program will include opening remarks by President Catharine Hill, music by the Vassar College Choir, and the convocation speech “Life’s Twists and Turns” by Professor Peipei Qiu.
Fall convocation includes a variety of older and newer traditions. Seniors attend in cap and gown. Immediately after the ceremony the freshmen class poses in front of Main Building for a group photo. Also afterward, seniors and freshmen are serenaded in front of Main with four traditional songs from a boisterous employee chorus.
Peipei Qiu is Professor of Chinese and Japanese on the Louise Boyd Dale and Alfred Lichtenstein Chair, and also is the current director of the Asian Studies Program. Recently she has gained considerable public attention for her new book Chinese Comfort Women: Testimonies from Imperial Japan's Sex Slaves, including press coverage from the Wall Street Journal and Voice of America.
